February 8, 2021: The minister of Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Honorable Marco Mendicino recently announced a new 3 year work permit pilot program. Under this program, eligible applicants may qualify for a 3 year work permit. The government of Canada is also implementing two new opportunities for Hong Kong residents to acquire Permanent Residency in Canada. Some of the eligibility conditions include:

1 year of work experience in Canada; and
meeting language; and
education criteria for e.g. Hong Kong residents who have graduated from a post-secondary learning institution in Canada

February 13, 2021: The Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited a record 27,000 Express Entry applicants under the Canadian Experience Class category for filing their permanent residency applications. This is a major initiative to retain more skilled workers in Canada and invigorate the Canadian economy, which suffered a setback due to the global pandemic. Interestingly, the policy will benefit nearly 90% of the candidates who are already resident in Canada.

Alberta announces a new entrepreneurial program for international graduates

On January 29, 2020. Alberta announced the ‘Foreign Graduate Start-up Visa Stream (FGVS). Applications are being accepted through the ‘Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP).

Some of the eligibility requirements:

  • Graduation (Canadian Equivalent) from post-secondary institution outside Canada within last 2 years;
  • Six months full-time work experience;
  • Minimum CLB 7 language score (English & French);
  • At least 34% ownership in a business located in the urban district;
  • Letter of recommendation from an AINP approved designated firm

New ministerial public policy permits former international students to obtain a one-time PGWP extension

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is now accepting applications from international students whose work permits are expiring or have expired. The program will lead to a;

  • One-time extension; and
  • A new open work permit with validity up to 18 months

Some of the eligibility requirements:

  • PGWP that expires in 120 days or less from the date of the application
  • Valid status in Canada;
  • Valid passport

The above represents a significant change in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) policy to retain international students to address Canada’s growing labour shortages.
